Annual Hearing Screenings at Ruby Van Meter March 5th

The Des Moines Public Schools Audiology team provides hearing screenings for students in preschool, kindergarten, first, second, and fifth grades throughout the district.

Ruby Van Meter screenings will take place on Friday, March 5, 2021.

Due to concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19, performing hearing screenings presents a new set of challenges this year. We will be conducting hearing screenings with additional precautions in place including appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), social distancing as much as possible, and disinfecting surfaces between each student.

Please understand that we will still be in close contact with your child for the placement of headphones while conducting the screening (and for further evaluation if your child does not pass).

If you do NOT want your child to participate in the hearing screening during the 2020-2021 school year, please contact the audiology team via the emails listed below in order to opt out:

• Rebecca Waymire, Audiologist (rebecca.waymire@dmschools.org)

• Joelle Christy, Audiologist (joelle.christy@dmschools.org)

Virtual Learners: Under usual circumstances, your student’s hearing would have been screened this year at school. Due to your selection of the virtual learning model, your student will not be present for the hearing screening.

If you would still like your student’s hearing to be checked on the date of the screening scheduled at his or her school, please reach out to your school nurse in order to make arrangements to bring your student in for the screening.

You can also schedule an appointment at the Des Moines Public Schools sound booth using the URL or phone number listed below.

You may also schedule a full hearing evaluation at the DMPS sound booth by booking an appointment HERE or calling (515) 242-8254.

If you currently have concerns related to your child’s hearing, please consult with your child’s medical provider or Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) physician for further evaluation.

We appreciate your understanding during this unprecedented time. We hope that you and your family continue to stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

The DMPS Audiology Team
